Pioneering Peer-Led Mental Health Initiatives
From Personal Struggles to Advocacy
Ezra “David” Israelian, also known as David “Eli” Israelian, has transformed his personal experiences being diagnosed with neurodiverse and mental health challenges into a mission-driven career, advocating for peer-led support and innovative solutions in the mental health sector.
A firm believer in continuous self-care, Ezra is also a weekly participant of neuroTree services, actively maintaining a sound mind through nutriTree’s nutritional psychiatry module, synapTree, incorporating Health-Risk Assessments (HRA) for microbial gut health maintenance, and physical exercise routines. His commitment to holistic well-being reflects the very principles he advocates within the mental health community.
Founding of Painted Brain
In 2009, Israelian co-founded Painted Brain, serving as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO). This organization offers a clubhouse model that integrates art, media, and technology group interventions for psychiatric populations, fostering increased connection, trust, and reduced anxiety.
Expansion into Virtual Support: Peer Mental Health
Recognizing the need for accessible mental health resources, Israelian founded Peer Mental Health in August 2019. As the Founder and CEO, he has been instrumental in creating virtual community-based and workforce solutions, addressing the digital divide and enhancing access to care through telecommunication platforms.
Notably, Israelian designed the first virtual reality trauma intervention for mass shooting survivors of Boulder’s BolderStrong community, creating a groundbreaking platform for trauma recovery through immersive technology.
Additional Initiatives
Beyond these organizations, Israelian has been involved with CodiePie, a technology company focused on social enterprise to support peers facing mental health challenges and housing insecurity. He has also contributed to platforms like Mental Health Times, aiming to provide resources, education, and support for mental health communities.
Vision for 2025
Looking ahead, Israelian aims to expand the reach of his organizations globally, leveraging technology to create inclusive, peer-led mental health support systems. He envisions a world where individuals with lived experiences are at the forefront of mental health advocacy and innovation, continuing to bridge gaps in care and fostering community-based healing.
Words That Define His Journey
“People ask me if you could take schizophrenia away. Well, why would I? That’s what makes me, me. That’s my lens. Why would you take away what has actually supported my development and becoming who I am?” — Ezra “David” Israelian
